Retired developer with four decades of experience in Microsoft Access, Excel, VBA, and SQL Server across public sector, engineering and media.
In God we trust, all others must bring data. — W Edwards Deming
Computer Programmer
I am a retired developer formerly working with Microsoft Access, Excel, VBA and SQL Server. Over a career spanning more than 40 years I have worked in most roles — developer, DBA, and information analyst.
My clients have spanned the Public Sector, engineering and media, primarily in the Midlands, with notable engagements at National Grid, Jaguar Land Rover, Severn Trent, Warwickshire County Council, and many others.
I haven't worked on a full-time contract since 2016, and with the introduction of IR35 across the private sector in 2021, I now look to work on PAYE Fixed Term Contracts only. My limited company, Industrial Computer Contracts (West Midlands) Ltd, operated for 39 years before closing in 2022.
To me the best software is easily understood and simple — even if it may be long-winded. Straightforward, reliable solutions that do exactly what they need to do.
Extensive experience designing, building and maintaining Access databases across versions from Access 97 through to 2016, including runtime deployments and VBA automation.
Complex Excel workbooks, macro automation, pivot tables, data entry forms with validation, management information reporting and consultancy on large Excel VBA estates.
Database administration, design and support using SQL Server 2000 through 2008. Experience upsizing Access databases to SQL Server and building workflow administration systems.
Information analysis, data validation and cleansing, business intelligence reporting, and supporting transitions between legacy systems and modern packaged solutions.
Temporary and contract DBA roles using SQL Server and other database technologies. Experienced with multi-user systems, migrations and production support environments.
Deep background in VAX/VMS, COBOL, Powerhouse, Rdb, FORTRAN, dBase and other platforms — valuable for supporting and migrating older systems still in production.
